We began working with the Land Transport Authority of Singapore in 2012 on a proposal for two monumental forms positioned on the end walls of Tampines MRT Station (DT32) along the Downtown Line.
Big Round measures 7 metres in diameter. Tall Long stands 9 metres tall. Big Round is conceived as a singular, expressive geometry, stripped of all excess in form and detail. Tall Long is buoyant in character, stretching upwards within the volume of the station.
Through their sheer scale and proportion, Big Round and Tall Long engage commuters by inviting them either to step back and take in the work, or to be drawn into a presence larger than the self. In this encounter, one becomes aware of the relationship between body and form, and between the individual and the vastness of the station.
A long and a round granite bench accompany the artworks at each end of the station.
