When Gardens by the Bay commissioned us to design outdoor benches, we were challenged to create seating that could withstand extreme tropical weather and heavy public use. The benches needed to be robust, comfortable, safe, easy to maintain, and thoughtfully integrated into the park’s natural setting.
By studying various locations across the park, we developed site-specific designs that move beyond the standard park bench. The result is a family of eight distinct bench designs that share a coherent design language, yet each responds uniquely to its immediate surroundings. More than a hundred benches were eventually installed throughout the garden.
Constructed from Balau wood planks on metal frames, the benches feature rounded edges for durability and a soft, inviting touch.
