Big Round & Tall Long
In 2012, we began working with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority on a proposal for two monumental sculptural forms for the end walls of Tampines MRT Station (DT32) along the Downtown Line.
Big Round, measuring seven metres in diameter, is conceived as a singular, expressive geometry. Tall Long, rising nine metres in height, possesses a buoyant character, stretching upwards within the volume of the station.
Through their scale and proportion, the two works engage commuters in different ways: inviting them to step back and take in the forms in their entirety, or to draw closer and experience a presence that exceeds the scale of the self. In this encounter, the relationship between body and form, individual and architecture, becomes palpable, revealing a heightened awareness of one’s own presence within the vastness of the station.
Accompanying the sculptures at either end of the station are a long granite bench and a round granite bench, extending the dialogue between geometry, material, and the human body into the everyday experience of the space.
